King of the Vikings

1964, color, 81 minutes; an Alta Vista Production; AIP production #6431; directed by Luis Lucia (as “Luis Lucian”); with Antonio Vilar, Javier Escriva, Luis Prendes, Marié Mahor (as “Marie Mahor”). Original production: El Príncipe encadenado; 1960, Italy/Spain, 100 minutes; produced by Europea de Cine S.A.

Press Synopsis: “Prophesied to bring misfortune, heartache, and violence, a Prince, at birth, is imprisoned by King. Thirty years later Prince is freed and rebels against his father, who abdicates rather than fight his son. In frenzied battle Prince kills his cousin, the new King, making prophesy come true. All is now right between the ex–King and his son the King.”

Another of the somewhat interchangeable foreign-produced historical dramas procured by AIP for their new TV arm, King of the Vikings begins, like many of its brethren, with an expository prologue:

The legend of the King of the Vikings has its beginnings here in the outlying regions of the Kingdom of Denmark early in the eleventh century. Thirty years have passed since the Viking ships last ploughed the dark seas. The Vikings themselves, having submitted to the rule of King Gudrun of Denmark, roam the land in scattered tribes.
